FIELDTRIP:
Fieldtrip Overview:
Twenty Students of Bachelor of Science and Information Technology and Bachelor of Science in Computer Science had enrolled in the subject “Field Trip and Seminar” with the subject code of 5027 under the advisory of Dr. Randy S. Gamboa. The twenty of them went to Metro Manila for their major field trip from 6:30 am of September 20 to 6:45 pm of September 24, 2011, accompanied by the travel agency called “Maynilad Tours and Educational Service”. In there, we visited two companies in every day with side trips to mall every after the end of company visits or the end of the day. On the last day of the trip because it is our free day, we went to Luneta Park then to the Philippine National Museum then to Tutuban, Divisoria and then went to airport to go for our flight.

DAY 1 (Morning)

Today, I went to a company visit to:
PLDT (Philippine Long Distance Telephone) COMPANY in Mandaluyong
What I Learned?
There are many things I learned from the PLDT Company when we visited their Innolab (Innovation Laboratory & Education Telecommunication Center of PLDT). Ma’am Anita “Annie” Ferrer introduced defined to us what PLDT means and what Innolab means. I also learned from her who is their current chairman of the board who is Mr. Manuel Pangilinan.
I also learned from them that there are three business groups in their company: the Fix lines (for Residential line and Business line), Wireless such as Smart and the Information communication Technology which provides data services such as internet.
One of the unforgettable things that I learned from PLDT is their Memorabilia. It is about how PLDT survived into what they are now. Ma’am Anita Ferrer discussed about the PLDT HISTORY where during ’28 – ’38 it was called “Age of Birth” where PLDT still uses Manual technology. I can’t also forget that during the years ’39 – ’48 was called “Age of Destruction” because it happened to be World War II where Japanese are not allowed to enter Philippines. During this year also they uses the first rotary telephone in the Philippines.
During year ’49 – ’58, which it was called “Age of Hope”, they recognize the power of data with the invention of modern underground telephone wires and cables. On year ’59 – ’68, they called it “Age of Change”. It is the time when American president was changed into a Filipino president in the name of Don Ramon Quanco. It is also the Age of Barbie as Doll and the time when they adapted computer mouse.
In year ’69 – ’78 as their “Age of Control”, PLDT had become the Filipino Center of Corporation and uses the barcoding. They first used the 1970’s telephone handset and celebrated their 50th Anniversary. In year ’79 – ’88 as the “Age of Revolution”, PLDT embrace newer technologies like cellular phones and fax machines as they gain the vital role of wide communication during people power revolution. During this age, they used 1980 payphone and X-4 Program Electronic Switching Equipment.
In year ’89 – ’98 as the “Age of Gatekeeper”, PLDT accelerate mobile and data services aiming for zero backlag programs. While in year ’99 – ’08 as the “Age of Transformation”, PLDT introduce the triple play services of video, voice and data. Also in this age, creation of PLDT SME nation acquires full ownership of Smart Communication (2000).
And, the year ’09 – and Beyond, rapid technology had evolved on PLDT since the demands of technology was ahead of the curve.
I also learned many things about network technologies from Engr. Edmund Mamboyo, the Head of Convergence Section of Technical Training Division of PLDT. He said that, years and more years ago, PLDT were just using basics of telecommunications like PSTN or also known as Public Switch Telecommunication Network but today, they uses mixtures of different services for telecommunication of different products. PLDT fixed Business such as DataCom (DSL), internet, VoIP (Voice over IP). Then PLDT is aiming for the future of the next generation network where Voice, Video, Data flows from one pair of cable with 25 megabits per seconds. I also learned that they are aiming for fiber optics to reach the home and making utilization for wireless electricity they called “Witricity”. I also learned from him some of the introduction of telecommunication like: telecom is the exchanges of information between distant sources; types of modern telecom; elements of a telecommunications link; and many more.

What I Like?
In our visit with the PLDT, what I like the most is the Business Solutions of PLDT. I like it because, in the business solution, it is the testing area of Product’s Proof of Concept (POC) before it ruled the market. A lot of PLDT services are demoed here. I also like their very beautiful and gargantuan Board Room where they review the products, views innolab videos, video conferencing and 24/7 watching windows of 12 wide screens where they monitor traffic congestion of the data through graphs and video feedbacks and figure graphics.

What I Don’t Like?
What I don’t like about the visit in PLDT is the abrupt cut-off of the topic of Engr. Edmund Mamboyo because his topic is very interesting because it includes networking technologies. It is so sad that he ended up Elements of a telecommunications link because we lack time to discuss the entire interesting topic.

DAY 1 (Afternoon)

Today, I went to a company visit to:
            SPI Sevirsoft in Parañaque
What I Learned?
What I had learned from SPI Sevirsoft is what Ms. Angela Jade Sales told us about. She shared to us the profile of the SPI Global. She said that SPI Global is a Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) Company founded on 1980 first named as Global Outsourcing Leader which is by 2011 received the award “Best BPO Company of the Year”. I also learned from her that SPI has a pseudo-acronym that stands for “Solution, People, Innovation” which practices the culture of Quality. We learned that SPI employees are professional, creative, partnering, responsive, trustworthy, and enthusiastic (Dynamic and Dependable). They also promote Work-Life-Balance where they enjoy through various activities while also enjoying their individual groups. Some of their Work-Life-Balance activities are Performing Arts, Mountaineering Club, Fitness Club, Toast Master (Tm), Writing Guild and SPI Camera Club (Obra). We also learned that SPI uses SDLC Waterfall. They also use Visual Studio.NET v.2003/2005; C#; ASP.NET; AJAX; MS SQL 2000/05/08; Crystal Reports 11; Microsoft Enterprise Library; and Windows Sharepoint Service (WSS 3.0).

What I Like?
What I like about the company visit in SPI is Corporate Solutions Development Group presented by Mr. Justin Garcia of IT Service Desk. He presented about their network and services, the structures of their networking from one branch to the other with the use of Cisco ASDM 6.2 and Putty. I also like in SPI are the visit on their Data Analysis, Web Development and Software Engineering Departments.

What I Don’t Like?
What I don’t like about the company visit in SPI is the visit on their advertising department where they publish books and magazine about science. I found it less interesting because it somehow does not jive to what we expected.

DAY 2 (Morning)

Today, I went to a company visit to:
University of Philippines Diliman in Quezon City. We visit UP theatre for the morning, attending for Y4IT
What I Learned?
Sitting in one of the UP theatre balcony seats along with my friends, I learned about the Windows Phone 7, its design features, functionalities and applications. From the speaker that Windows Phone 7 has many different stuffs that it uniquely does such as it multitask different frames or window; create shortcuts of the application in its menu bar; it uses multi-threading creating dynamic messaging; runs on different device like Samsung, Nokia, LG, etc.; it can easily upload files; has 8 GHrtz because it is connected to the cloud; runs on silverlight; and it is smart that has office built-in an xbox’s.
I also learned a lot of Game Development from Mr. Alvin Gendrano, the speaker. He introduced a game like Wii but without using any controller except for your body itself. It was amazing to know that there had been technologies like that which can read your body movement and uses it as a command to play the game.

What I Like?
First and foremost, what I like about the Convention in the UP theatre is when the three mascots of Y4it in colors Green, Yellow and Orange. They are so cute. I also like the part of the program when the first speaker had talk about the amazing facts of Windows Phone 7.

What I Don’t Like?
In the morning of the Y4IT convention at UP theatre, I really don’t like the idle time when it the convention hadn’t started yet because some guest had not yet arrived. It was past 9:00 am but the program had not yet started, worst, no one had entertained the crowd to keep them alive. All I found myself drifting into short nap out of boredom and when I wake up, the program had not yet started. I hate that part of the program because, it was too dull.

DAY 2 (Afternoon)

Today, I went to a company visit to:
University of Philippines Diliman in Quezon City. We visit UP Film Centre for the afternoon, attending for Y4IT.
What I Learned?
In the UP Film Centre, we sat in the front rows of the Film Center and listened to the various speakers who deliver their topics. In there I learned about Values of Future IT Professional which talk about Carrier advancement of what IT would be and Certifications of an IT professionals, and very wonderful Ideas on the future Career of IT students.
I also learned about Smart devices and How to build it, from one of the speaker named Yung-Cheol Byun who talks about the topic “Smart Life & Smart Application”. I found out that Smart devices like IPod, Galaxy Tab 10.2, etc., have different usage in our daily life. I will never forget that Mr. Byun quoted a definition of what is Smart Life for him: “It is the Story of Daily life with extraordinary ways.”
It was so interesting to find out that Smart devices has different Smart apps that you may think that it really can help you through your daily life. From him, I found out that there is different apps we never know. Apps like the following items listed below kick my interest:
·         “Sleep Cycle” – an alarm setter with its brain of its own that will tell you automatically.
·         “Weather Checker” – a lot of Korean and Japanese uses it to check on the weather of the day. When there are changes in the weather forecast it will automatically and literally “tell” you.
·         “Instapaper” – where the user can keep an article or pdf file, read it and can edit it.
·         “Soundhound” – a song searcher device, very handy when you don’t know the song. You can let your Smart device hear the song and in a second or two, it will return the title of the song.
·         “Awesome Note” – where you can write all your files, thoughts, and even synchronize them.
·         “Viewti” – accurate distance measurer.
·         “Toonpaint” – get nice caricature from a clip or picture.
·         “starwalk” – locate positions of stars, constellations and planets.
·         “movie creator” – edit clip and connects different  video clips and make them as one

What I Like?
What I like about the afternoon convention the talk about “Competitive Computing”. It is all about a course where you can develop strategies especially in programming, data structures and algorithm through programming competition, division-wide, region-wide, nationwide and continent-wide and worldwide. Though I’m not really that better when it comes to programming, I really like the notion of joining so that you can enhance your skills. What I also like in the event at UP Film centre is when I win a ITTC shirt from a bring-me game in which the Host ask to bring them a DVD. I also like the Y4IT Guide book signature-mania at Bahay ng Alumnai where we had time to have a sign and a stamp from the biggest IT-related companies and organization in the Philippines. But, more than anything else, I really love the experience in riding the UP most famous means of transportation. It’s the “UP IKOT” dropping us near “UP OBLATION” where we had a little picture taking.

What I Don’t Like?
In the afternoon spent in UP Diliman, the things I don’t like the most is that I lost my certification stub and I receive no Certificate of Attendance. I was very unlucky though. I don’t like one of the speakers who speak about something I can’t remember because almost all of the delegates drifted into sleep out of his very uninteresting topic. Swear, we slept 5 minutes right after he started and when we woke up, we did not expect to still see him talking about a topic so boring.

DAY 3 (Morning)

Today, I went to a company visit to:
Fluor Daniels in Alabang
What I Learned?
Properly position right inside the Fluor Daniels Board room, we listened to Ms. Anna Tupas about the topic “6 things Successful teams have in Common”. I was motivated to know them because I know that for the near future, I will be working in team. I learned from her that following six things:
ü  Purpose – it is the reason why your group/team of experts exists.
ü  Process – it is the way to set thing done, or how you handle things.
ü  Communication – exchanges of ideas and feeling based on mutual respect.
ü  Involvement – encouragement to participate in key activities to finish the job.
ü  Commitment – willingness to give your 100% or more.
ü  Trust – relying to fellow team member without doubting them.
It was also fascinating to learn the history and stone tablet of the Fluor Daniels Company. I learned that in 1987, a first Fluor Company in Philippines was established. Fluor is a huge multi-company all over the globe with total head counts of 1,667 as of Sept 19, 2011.
I also learned how Fluor view IT profession for them. They said that IT designs digitally, provides easy communication, and make great work reduction. Mr. Angelo Canatin quoted “the future of IT is moving to the cloud”.

What I Like?
During the Visit in Fluor Daniels, our visitation to their IT Department in 15th floor, especially our stopover at their data Center in Fourth Floor. In the Data Centre where Mr. Mar Olfato had showed us, I really like their very small and very cold data banks. It fascinates me to see large data server with wire connected to the different parts of the world; Virtualization servers; Environment Control System; Insular  Security Control System; Switch and Hubs for Cebu and Manila; 12 EMC hard drives which cost of one drive as expensive as one Ferrari car. I do really love their snacks too. It is a pair of toasted bread paired with yellow yummy spaghetti. I also like there freebies a ballpoint pen with a built-in maze game. I also like how they operate their door with the use of their IDs.
By the way, I also like the topic about “How to Survive in a trapped Elevator” presented by John Valencia. He said the following tips:
·         Stay Calm no matter what.
·         Press another button or open button for responses.
·         Elevator’s emergency telephone, else uses your cell-phone.
·         And enjoy yourself while waiting for help.

What I Don’t Like?
What I don’t like about the Fluor Daniels are the following: the diagram-thingy discussion about IT LIVING ORGANISM because I understand it less than I expected. There’re so many doodles and that box stuffs to form the diagram.

DAY 3 (Afternoon)

Today, I went to a company visit to:
Science and Technology Information Institute (STII) of Department of Science and Technology (DOST),

What I Learned?
I learned from Gerado de Jesus that DOST is comprised with 21 government agencies and one of them is STII or also known as Science Technology Information Institute. Through a video they shared, we learned about the HITS or also known as High Impact Technology Solutions where they give IT services and IT Innovation in the field of Health & Nutrition, ICT & Education, Transport, and Energy, Calamities and etc. There is also a talk about IPV4 and IPV6 which gives me additional knowledge about networking. I also learned that IPV4 has 4.3 Billion IPs yet almost the entire IPV4 is used, while IPV6 has 3.4x10^38 or 340 undecillion.

What I Like?
During our visit at the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), I like the having the tour on their museum where some of the Filipino Inventions are housed. I also like their tender and welcoming ideas when our instructor had asked one of the DOST officer if is there any job opportunity in DOST.

What I Don’t Like?
What I don’t like during our visit to the DOST is that there are only two speaker with one topics and it disappoints me because I really wanted to learn more about the recent developments of DOST-STII.

DAY 4 (Morning)

Today, I went to a company visit to:
Social Security System (SSS)
What I Learned?
SSS or the Social Security System welcomes us openly for our educational tour. From the topic “Briefing on SSS” by Ms. Annie Hugo, what I learned was about the programs SSS had for the people like Compulsory Coverage, Investment Reverse Fund and Earning-related benefits. It covers employees of public or private sectors not over 60 years old including self-employed, part-time, and full time. It takes effect on the very first day of the employment. If self-employed, it takes effect on the day of payment.

What I Like?
What I like about our visit in the SSS is the topic concerning SSS Computer Operations delivered by Ms. Farah S. Malto of information Technology management group. It is very interesting how this governmental organization adopts technological changes since 1970. I also like the fact that I had given an impromptu speech in place of our instruction. Though, I’m not that prepared, this experience is very heart-warming to think that I can somehow manage to talk and deliver my words in front of the crowd.

What I Don’t Like?
What I don’t like in our tour in SSS is that we did not have the opportunity to see their Data Centre face-to-face. It is very disappointing though, but we have no choice because their data centre was undergoing maintenance during that time. I also don’t like the visit to the SSS Museum Tour because I found it less interesting than what I was expecting.

DAY 4 (Afternoon)

Today, I went to a company visit to:
Exist Global
What I Learned?
Visiting one of the Leading BPO in the Philippines, we have our educational tour in Exist Global TechBar. In there, I learned many things like “Building a Career in the ICT Industry”. In this topic I learned what comes next after graduating. You can be either a network system designer or internet design administrator. You can be Information or data analyst, or SE programmer. I also learn what really open source is. Nelvin Driz told us that open source codes creates apps and libraries gives customers benefit for free like Ubuntu, Blender, Eclipse, PIDGIN,
I will always remember Mr. Driz quoted: “It’s actually not what you know, but the drive to know”. It starts with the interest, then contribute, modify and create.

What I Like?
Exist Global believes on “Training is very important”. ECC or also known as Exist Code Camp woke my interest because I really like their idea of having a 6-week Training Program for free if you pass their exam. And it really made me think that if I graduated, I will be applying for a job on Exist, pass the exam and have the basic training about Ruby-on-Rails, Java. Plus, this training is have no training bonds. This is awesome
I also like their free giveaway environmental bag for us. It’s kinda big but it’s awesome.

What I Don’t Like?
As we visit the Exist Global, I don’t like the fact that the convention had ended very soon and we expect to learn more than they had presented. It was disappointing to look at that fact though but it is very enjoyable.

DAY 5
Today, I went to a company visit to:
Luneta Park, then to Philippines National Museum and lastly went to Divisoria.
Because it is our free day and the last day of our Field Trip, we didn’t visit any company. The group decided to go to Luneta Park where Rizal’s Monument is standing together with the two royal guards securing the monument. In there, we did picture taking and jump shots then we had the opportunity to ride a Carousel where its carriage looks like Cinderella’s carousel. Right after our trip in the Luneta Park, we booked a visit on one of the Philippine National Museum buildings where we find five different rooms of the Treasures of San Diego where it houses the remains and the treasure found in the wrecked ship which submerged in the Philippine Theory. There is also rooms that show the life from our ancestors to the modern Life. We also visited an archive of naturally preserved Philippine species both endangered or not. Right after our educational tour, we went to Divisoria to resume our shopping from last night.
SEMINAR:
Seminar Overview:
As part of the subject Field Trip and Seminar with the subject code of 5027 under the advisory of Dr. Randy S. Gamboa, the students under the subject are required to attend a seminar. In our case, we attended the Developer’s Connect in University of Southeastern Philippines Social Hall held last September 2011. The Developer’s Connect is a Seminar with three segments: the lightning talks, Birds of a Feather and Hackathon.
Lightning talk is a segment where different speakers had prepared 15-minute about their topics of expertise. The Birds of a Feather is a friendly debate segment where there are three or more teams that will defend their teams. The hackathon is a hacking competition where group of competitors programmed a specific design.

Today, I went to a seminar to:
University of Southeastern Philippines Social Hall
What I Learned?
I learned about some open source programs and applications that are out in the public, the features of Ubuntu and Linux OS’s. I also learned that there is a open source site that features the map of the world that all information and maps are edited by different users.
What I Like?
I like really like the segment of Birds of A feather where three teams had to defend who is the best OS in the world. Is it Linux, MacOS, or Windows? I also like the topic of the open street map where Filipino programmers created an accurate map of the world where contributors are all over the globe.
What I Don’t Like?
One of the speakers who deliver his speech through a live feed camera did not interest me because I did not understand any of his topics or what was his topic all about.

APPENDIXES:

RECOMMENDATION
To the next Class President, Officers and Students who will enroll in the next year’s Field Trip and Seminar, here’s my recommendation listed below:
·         Be on time. Deadlines are deadlines. Unlike our field trip, as class president, I almost did not meet some of the deadlines in time that sometimes, results to changing decision.
·         Coordinate. Always contact the travel agency to avoid confusion
·         Company choice is very important.
